I have found that using one of the two non-American companies can get you a better rate than the traditional companies.   The best pricing is usually Sixt and Europcar.  YMMV

 Intra-European Airlines

If you want to visit another country while in Europe, you’ll have plenty of options!  Flying within Europe is relatively cheap and there are many budget airlines available.  Of course, with a budget price comes more restrictions, so pay attention to what your ticket includes.

Budget airlines that service either Florence Peretola (FLR) or Pisa Galileo Galilei (PSA) airports are RyanAir, EasyJet, Meridiana, and Vueling.

Trains in Europe

Trenitalia is the main train service in Italy.  It is also priced well.
